Hooray! On Thursday 4th August Rata class went on a Kiwi Tracker Trip in the Ohope Scenic Reserve. Bridget Palmer and Duncan were our fantastic guides and tutors and they showed us all the things they do to protect our precious native kiwi bird. We started at Burma Road and walked 5kms along an awesome bush track stopping along the way to use the tracker to see if we could hear any kiwi close by. We also learned about the pest control traps, the weta hotels, listened for the native bird calls and even found some real kiwi poo that showed us Kiwi had been along our track earlier. We had lunch at the whare and then went on a Kiwi tracker treasure hunt to find Fluffy the toy kiwi who had a transmitter on his leg. Then we carried on our walk and came out of the bush on a hill high above Ohope beach. What a view looking out over the sea to Moutohora and Whakari. We walked down the big hill and had a quick rest before heading back to school. What a great day we had and we learn't so much about saving the Kiwi. Thank you to all our wonderful parent helpers and to our fantastic guides Bridget and Duncan...You Rock!!!
